It's SUMMER! That means you might have kids at home AND you might be looking for ways to keep them busy. Why not include them in your fitness routine? Summer is a great time to re-evaluate your own fitness goals and model a healthy lifestyle for the entire family! Today I was on FOX 59 to share my advice on how to stay motivated during the summer months as well as some family-friendly fitness options! WATCH THE VIDEO: http://go.fox59.com/1nvuOUK
1.) ADJUST YOUR SCHEDULE
Whether you’re a stay-at-home parent, a work-from-home parent or a full-time working parent, fitness needs to be part of of your daily schedule. FITNESS IS NOT NEGOTIABLE. But during the summer months, your schedule likely changes - but that doesn’t mean you just give up on fitness. ADJUST YOUR SCHEDULE TO MAKE IT WORK! Yes, fitness IS that important. Why?? Because it's about having the energy to play with your kids, to go on adventures with your family, to have an incredible quality of life! Schedule fitness into your life just like any other appointment.
2.) FIND FAMILY-FRIENDLY ACTIVITIES
Being active WITH your kids is a great way to lead by example while also getting some quality time with them. Make a day of it - take a bike ride to the park, have a picnic then let the kids play at the splash park. Win-Win-Win! Check out your town’s local Parks & Recreation website, there are tons of free - or nearly free programs going on that YOU and the kids can be involved in. Indy’s Child Magazine is another great and FREE resource for parents. There are tons of activities listed in there each month.
3.) BE FLEXIBLE
Everyone has to find fitness that works for THEM. For most people, that does not include being at the gym for 2 hours a day! Sometimes we create this cookie-cutter image of fitness in our head, a kind of black and white picture of how fitness should look and feel in our lives. The truth is we need to BE FLEXIBLE in how fitness looks and feels in our lives....and that our fitness journey will have ups, downs, peaks, valleys, detours, roadblocks, scenic paths, water hazards, you name it!! The key is to BE FLEXIBLE in what we do and just KEEP DOING SOMETHING!!! Something is ALWAYS better than nothing. What works for us during one part of our lives will be different than what works for us in another part of our lives.
When my girls were babies, my fitness consisted of walks in a jogger stroller and at home workouts with my THE FIRM VHS tapes Now I am in a different phase of my life and my fitness looks different. As I get older, my fitness might change again....and that's okay!!
Keep it simple. Keep it consistent. Adjust. Tweak. Move. Believe you can. Because....#yesyoucan.
