I will tell you that the best results I've gotten are from pushing play at home. BUT that doesn't mean that is my ONLY option for fitness. In fact, I LOVE getting out and trying new fitness options. Options are awesome -- there isn't ONE way to live your healthiest, fierce, life, there are MANY ways so why not get out and try some of them -- any of them!
I'm launching a new blog series called, Fit in the City, to take you into the studio and classes with me.
The more I learn about fitness, the more passionate I become about low-impact, high-technique, focused workouts, especially ones that have an element of resistance training. Through the magic of social media, I met an incredible Pure Barre teacher -who is also an INCREDIBLE FIERCE FEMALE - in NYC and took her class whilst on a trip to the city last year. Literally, 5 minutes in, I was laughing at how freaking HARD this NON-impact, SMALL-movement group fitness class was - and still is! I looked at my friend Christina (Christina Pazcoguin) during class and said, “This is harder than Insanity!”
But...I fell in love with the format and sought out classes once we returned to Carmel, Indiana. The concentrated movement of Pure Barre strengthened my core AND really got into my hamstrings - always a weak area for me. Since baby # 3 was born, my low back has been a weak area for me too. It became apparent quickly that Pure Barre would help me strengthen my low back with zero impact - another plus.
Welcome to class
From the website, Pure Barre describes itself as “a total body workout that uses the ballet barre to perform small, isometric movements, which burn fat, sculpt muscles and create long, lean physiques. It mixes elements of Pilates, dance, yoga and functional training, and the moves are choreographed to motivating music.”
The class itself is divided into segments, much like any group exercise class might be. A warm-up, resistance training for the upper body with the hand weights, inner and outer thigh, seat work, core work, lower back work, and a final blast for the booty, a total body workout in 50 minutes. Some stretching happens in between the segments and at the end. If there was piece I’d add to or change about this format, it would be to incorporate more stretching. This is the perfect format to not only burn and tone, but to also lengthen and stretch. And it’s for sure, nobody does enough stretching!!
Final #fierce thoughts
Overall, this is a really great format to add in to any fitness regimen. Yes, it is VERY instructor dependent BUT the instructors do operate within a format, so some of the workout IS up to the participant. I’ve had EXCELLENT and not so excellent instructors, as is the case in any format. Absolutely give this class a go, and if you don’t fall in love with the format or the instructor at first, try a few more classes. Find an instructor that you enjoy, that pushes you and gives you tangible corrections. I believe Pure Barre is a safe effective way to challenge and change your body and is a great addition to anyone’s fitness life!
Find a Pure Barre near you
The Pure Barre format is a franchise, so you can take classes at small studios all across the country. All classes utilize the same equipment: a small rubber Pilates-type ball, small hand weights, either 2 or 3 pounds, and a rubber tube shaped like a figure 8. And believe me when I say...you might not think 2 or 3 pound hand weights are much til you take this class!
