Mary asked me to start teaching a kickboxing class. She'd seen me in class and thought I should teach. Simple conversation. I said yes, and had no idea how that one word would change the course of my life. What started as teaching a class or 2 grew into being a master trainer, training people from all over the world, teaching on stages in front of 25,000 people and building a multi-million dollar fitness business.
Fitness connects people in ways I could never even imagine and and we have a deep passion for sharing our love of health and fitness with others.
This weekend I went back to my roots as a Master Trainer. I hosted 125 amazing folks from all over the Midwest at the Fishers YMCA for a CORE DE FORCE LIVE instructor training, led by the program creators Joel Freeman and Jericho McMatthews. It was so cool to watch the attendees come in a little nervous and unsure...and leave feeling like a total badasses.
That's what fitness can do. It's more than just exercise. It's life.
Sunday is the day! Who is ready to FIND YOUR FIGHT? This is the LAST CALL for the CORE DE FORCE LIVE certification at the Fishers YMCA with Super Trainers and creators of the home AND live programs, Joel Freeman and Jericho McMatthews! ENROLL NOW!

Choosing a personal trainer can be as tough of a decision as choosing your doctor - or child's name. Why? Because THAT is how important it is!
I've had a trainer at the Fishers YMCA for several years and I will be hard-pressed to EVER miss a session with him because I know he is going to push me to try harder, do more and get uncomfortable. And you know what I say -- when you get uncomfortable you GROW, whether inside or outside the gym.
Check out this great article from Greatist.com for 8 TIPS ON CHOOSING A TRAINER.
The demand for the April 19th PiYo certification was INCREDIBLE! So incredible, that the 56 registrants have maxed out the space at Purdue...soo...that means we'll split up the certification and offer a SECOND PiYo certification!
The new PiYo certification date is MAY 10TH and will be held at the Fishers YMCA. That training will go LIVE today and should be open for registrations by end of business day today. Just go to www.julievoris.com/get-certified for more information on how to register!!
Who is excited?!
If you've ever taken a class or certification of mine, you've probably heard me say, "You've got to get uncomfortable." When you get out of your comfort zone you'll grow. Well I had to take my own advice this week and get uncomfortable.
I have no problem getting in front of 100+ people at the Fishers YMCA to teach a class -- or even in front of 250 people during a certification like I did last year in Las Vegas -- but have me sit down and talk, that's where the nerves kick in. I'm MUCH more comfortable when I can MOVE. But this week, I got uncomfortable and I'm SO grateful for the experience.
WISH-TV's morning news anchor, Lauren Lowrey, came to the Fishers YMCA to get a sneak peek at what we are all about and allowed me to share my passion for fitness! I still get goosebumps when I teach class...I still believe all of us are capable of doing more and BEING more...I still believe fitness is non-negotiable and it's up to us to make it happen in a way that works for us....I still love love love my job...I still get so inspired by by class members...I still aspire to make a difference every dang day.
So, yes I was uncomfortable at times. But yes, it was TOTALLY worth it!
Tune in to WISH-TV on April 1 to see the interview!
It is Y FOR ALL WEEK!! That means we are raising money to help everyone be a part of the YMCA. Take a moment...and think about your network at the Y....can you imagine NOT having the experience of meeting your friends, connecting, sharing, getting healthy, just being together, at the YMCA?
I grew up in a YMCA...took swim lessons, gymnastics lessons, and during summers in college, tennis lessons. My girls all took swim lessons at the YMCA, starting with the Mommy and Me classes...and yes, I cried when Jessy was old enough to take swim lessons on her own and there was no more Mommy and Me class.
We moved several times and the Y has been a part of our moves. in 2001, the Y played an integral part in my life. We moved to a town where I didn't know anyone...my husband started his first head coaching job and was never home....my oldest started kindergarten...my middle started preschool...I had a newborn baby....my father passed away....our dog died. All in the span of about 3 months. All I could do each day was get up, get the girls to school, and myself to the Y. I could not think past that. I knew if I could get myself to the Y to workout, I'd figure out the rest of the day from there. The Waukesha Family YMCA saved me.
I started my fitness career at that Waukesha Family YMCA. Sitting on the blue bench in the lobby, waiting on my girls to finish gymnastics, the fitness director sat down next to me and said, "you need to start teaching and I want you to start next month." As a former high school English teacher who was passionate about fitness, it kind of blew my mind why I never thought to put the two of my loves together - teaching + fitness = heaven. It took someone at the YMCA to put an opportunity in front of me that would change my life.
The YMCA is about more than just fitness...it's about more than fancy locker rooms or pretty towels or top of the line equipment. It's about community. It's about caring. It's about making a difference. It's about family. It's about serving others. And this week we get the chance to help others have the same opportunity that we might take for granted every day....and that's to join our YMCA.
So please.....get out your SUPER HERO GEAR and get out your CASH!! Tomorrow and Friday, have fun with your favorite super hero stuff...and bring CASH!! I'll be taking donations at the door and every penny goes to the Y for All Campaign. Every dollar makes a difference. Spread the word and let's raise some serious money for the Y for All!!
